· unless a knife is massively fucked up you're better off with a good set of wet stones. a sander takes off a lot of material and is major overkill for sharpening tasks. a knicked up blade can be dealt with with stones and will take off less material in the process. up to you though, it's not my knife.
I have a grinder, but right now it doesn't work, so I built this jig from the remains of a homebuilt router table. The rest needs to be one inch further back and the front of the rest needs to be relieved but it works and it took just an hour to design and build. Yes belts are a very common method for factories and for commercial services. However without liquid cooling, even if you have a master's touch and use light pressure you are still overheating the steel at the microns thick apex which will drastically reduce edge retention. Not talking about initial sharpness, but edge longevity.

· Have been considering buying a belt grinder (I think they're sometimes referred to as a strip sander). The model I'm looking at uses the 1″ X 42″ belts, avail. in various grits, with the belt running vertical up from the workbench top. I realize I would get a flat grind instead of a hollow grind. Has anyone had success using these?
· Grind the side relief angles on both sides of the nose at about 15 degrees for efficient cutting on a small lathe. 15 degrees is enough to cut freely but not aggressive enough to sace edge strength. Cutting loads are very high when threading so try not to exceed this 15 degree recommendation if you can help it.
